Once again a new season of The Biggest Loser is on TV. I guess the ratings of the show are so high that they are back. Is it the pain and discomfort that the public loves to see? I know we are all after the same bottom line which is to help people change their lifestyle to become healthier and fit. My concern is the way they go about it.
Since when do you take someone who is morbidly obese and make them run one mile? Take any person who doesn’t exercise and have them run one mile and they will be huffing and puffing and end up with very sore muscles. Take someone who is obese, the pressure they are placing on their joints such as the knees and lower back alone is mind boggling. Think about how hard their heart works to pump blood through their body when they are not exercising, and then have them run one mile? Is The Biggest Loser waiting for a death to happen?
This past week’s show had a contest to see who will be going to the ranch. They had to complete 500 step ups or run one mile. The stepping up and down for a count of 500 is not good for the knees unless you slowly build up this exercise. On the show they had a woman with asthma and good ole Jillian holding her hands and pushing her to continue as she almost passed out. Gee what a great way of encouraging someone to become fit.
Yes obesity is an epidemic and the many health issues that come with it. Working out for eight hours a day on only 1200 calories is not a healthy way to lose weight. There are too many of us who care about our clients and don’t want to see them injured. If you are over- weight and are looking for a program to start, do your research. Taking weight off slowly is healthier for you. I know you all want the overnight weight loss, but be smart. There have been so many articles written about The Biggest Loser and what you see on TV is for the ratings. What really goes on behind the scenes have been told by a few of the previous contestants. It is not healthy the way they have their contestants taking off the weight. Some of the side effects of unhealthy weight loss are dull skin, hair loss and lots of other things have been happening that they don’t tell you about.
I did write to the organization that I was certified through since Jillian has her face on the front cover of their magazines and now you can take courses and become certified with Jillian as the instructor. I asked if there was a certification in how to yell and cuss at your client and how to correctly climb on their back and or chest, so they can carry you around the gym. I did come to find out that Jillian has paid to have her face on the cover of the magazine and paid to have some of the certifications with her. I know that this organization has sold out. I am more than just a little disappointed in them to allow Jillian to become the face of what I thought was a great organization.
